Cast iron is made by reducing iron ore in a blast furnace. The liquid iron is then cast, or poured and hardened. These are called pigs, these pigs are then re-melted with scrap metal and other alloys in cupola furnaces and recast.
Cast iron tends to be brittle, but has many applications in the engineering world due to its low melting point and excellent machinability. Cast iron also has good fluidity, cast ability and has a good resistance to deformation and wear. Cast iron also has resistance to destruction and weakening by rust (oxidation).
Cast iron is sometimes referred to as Meehanite, this is a registered trademark for cast irons.
