Engineering Steel FAQs Engineering steel is manufactured in a number of different grades that can then be treated to produce the level of tensile strength and mechanical properties that is required according to the individual project or application. BDMS stands for Bright Drawn Mild Steel, also known as En1a – a low-carbon steel. En1a is a low-carbon mild steel that has good cutting qualities and is suitable for both automatic and CNC machining. En3b is a BDMS (Bright Drawn Mild Steel) that has excellent welding properties. It is particularly good for low-stress engineering applications. En24t is one of the hardest of the engineering steel grades and is widely used in applications such as gears, shafts, studs, and bolts. The metal can be further hardened to enhance its resistance to wear and tear through induction or nitride processes. Rapid Metals has a policy of no minimum order values – you buy what you need. We stock a wide range of different grade engineering steels. Simply tell us how much you need of any particular grade, and we will cut it to size. Yes. You can input quantities and sizes through our online ordering system on our website. Your ‘basket’ will automatically calculate prices according to your requirements.
