Brass flat stock can be the basis of many fittings and components, whether used directly as plain flat bar or to be cut, machined or worked into something more intricate.
The strength and corrosion resistance of brass make forms of flat bar a good choice for applications where robustness is key, such as mechanical components, plumbing fittings and architectural and decorative details.
Brass flat is often used in furniture making and interior fitting down or design. It can be used in flat form for making hinges, brackets, strips and other parts. Brass flat is used as edging for work surfaces or can be used to form a brass-finish surface. Flat brass metal can form the basis of further finishing for more intricately shaped parts and details, whether functional or decorative.
Flat brass bar can also be used for electrical busbars or be the basis for smaller electrical components such as switches and component holders.
Brass is corrosion-resistant, highly machinable and very ductile. Brass also has inherent anti-microbial properties. Brass offers excellent thermal conductivity and good electrical conductivity.
Among the commonly used metals, brass has low to moderate hardness and a relatively low melting point (typically around 940-980 deg. C).
Because of this, brass is especially responsive and suitable for hot working. This makes it suited to forming complex shapes by hot extrusion and other heat-applying methods. The same goes for ductility – brass round bar can be drawn when hot-worked, but ductility when cold is limited.
Because heating makes brass softer, brass flat bar cannot be heat-hardened, but can be hardened by cold-working. However, care must be taken, as cold-worked brass rapidly transforms from hard to brittle.
Brass metal forms a patina when exposed to atmospheric moisture, so it is corrosion-resistant in all but the harshest environments. Due to the high salt content of seawater, this environment requires specialised marine brass.
Brass flat bar is renowned for excellent machineability, offering smooth, easy and accurate cutting, whether by a manual tap or die or complex CNC processes.
