However it is described, En24t steel is favoured throughout the engineering and manufacturing sector for its exceptional wear resistance and toughness. It is an an alloy with nickel, chromium and molybdenum added to the steel. The molybdenum is added to distort the natural lattice of the steel grain. Because the steel crystals in the grain are no longer nicely aligned, they lock together around the molybdenum atoms, creating a harder and less brittle metal. The chromium stops the molybdenum and the carbon in the steel bonding to create soft graphite. The nickel increases the alloy’s toughness.
The result is a wear-resistant and highly machineable steel. En24t material is used for making components and assemblies that must endure situations with high stress, wear or impact. Automotive uses such as gears, driveshafts, bearings and axles are typical uses for En24t steel and it is also commonly found in aircraft landing gear components. It is well suited to making pins and studs that carry high working or structural loads and precision-machined fasteners. En24t’s high resistance to wear and toughness also makes it a common choice for knives, blades and other tools that must maintain a precise edge or form.
