WHAT ARE THE DIMENSIONS OF SEAMLESS STEEL TUBE?

Rapid Metals can supply a wide selection of standard dimensions of seamless steel tube, with different diameters and wall thicknesses.

Diameters range from 6mm to 50.8mm (or from 1/2” inch to 2”), and wall thicknesses between 1mm and 5mm (or 1/16” inch to 1/4” inch). Not all thicknesses are available on all diameters – the thicker tubes are only available on larger diameter seamless steel tube.

With our online store you can also filter by inner diameter if this is the key dimensions for your purpose.

Choose your diameter and wall thickness, and then use our bespoke cutting service to set the length you need. This minimises on-site cutting once your steel tubes arrive, as well as wastage once the job is done.

WHAT ARE THE USES OF SEAMLESS STEEL TUBE?

The inherent strength and precision of seamless steel tubes make them incredibly versatile and useful for applications ranging from heavy industry to precision engineering and hobby projects.

In engineering, CDS steel tubes are used for making shafts, bushes, sleeves, spacers and other mechanical parts. They can also be formed into structural armatures, frames and cages. In the material handling and industrial sectors, seamless steel tubes are often used for making rollers for conveyors and other equipment.

The automotive sector will use mild steel tubing for all these kinds of uses, and the strength and consistency of CDS tube also make it a good choice for making safety-critical structures such as roll cages and space frames.

The agricultural sector, from equipment manufacturers to farmers, makes much use of steel tubes, whether to make structures, implements and equipment from scratch or for repairs or one-off builds and installations.

Seamless steel tube can meet the requirements for hydraulic pistons and cylinders, and hydraulic lines that need bending and flaring while maintaining their structural strength. WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF SEAMLESS STEEL TUBE?

CDS tube is so-called because of how it is made and its main distinguishing property – the initials stand for Cold Drawn Seamless.

This means that the mild steel isn’t formed into a hollow tube by being rolled and welded from a flat piece of metal, which inevitably results in an inconsistent structure in the finished product, as well as potential for structural weaknesses to develop.

CDS is formed by forcing a solid, cold billet of steel through a piercing rod or over a mandrel. The sheer pressure forms the metal into the tubular shape, creating a seamless, strong and consistent structure.

This gives CDS seamless steel tube excellent deformation ability, meaning the tube can be bent and shaped without compromising their structural integrity. Cold Drawn Seamless steel tubes also resist stretching (elongation) under stress and have good impact strength. With no seams, welds or internal inconsistencies, CDS steel tube is also less prone to fatigue and cracking than other types of steel tubes.
