Another thing that sets galvanised steel apart from standard steel is its matte-grey exterior. This is achieved due to the fact that zinc that is applied via electro galvanising is smoother than galvanised steel made with continuous galvanising. All in all, you’re guaranteed a quality finish when it comes to working with galvanised steel.

Formability

Upon galvanised steel being formed into a product, users needn’t worry about the zinc coating losing its adhesion or resulting in cracking. Zinc coating is resistant to such mishaps, meaning that galvanised steel can be freely moulded into a multitude of products.

Durability

In addition to being able to easily form galvanised steel, it’s also effortlessly transported. This is due to the zinc coating that is incredibly resistant to scratches from abrasion; special handling doesn’t need to be of concern with galvanised steel, as it’s incredibly durable.

Recyclability

Regardless of the type, steel is the most widely recycled metal. Similarly, the longevity of galvanised steel means that these solutions won’t need to be constantly replaced. Therefore, any user of galvanised metal can rest assured that they’re hitting their sustainability targets.

Cohesion

Most coatings rely solely on the preparation of the steel to achieve adhesion; however, this isn’t the case for galvanised steel. Instead, hot-dipped galvanising leads to a coating bonded metallurgically to the steel. In simple terms, the iron and zinc undergo a reaction, which results in the formation of alloys. Consequently, the coating becomes part of the steel. This is a unique characteristic that doesn’t apply to many other metals.

Toughness

As previously mentioned, galvanised steel doesn’t require special handling due to its durable nature; however, its toughness goes well beyond this. Since the zinc layer is relatively soft, it’s able to absorb most of the shock of any contact. For instance, the galvanised coating of metal posts will remain intact, even after being hit by a car.

Magnetism

Contrary to popular belief, galvanised steel is magnetic because galvanising doesn’t affect the magnetic behaviour of steel. Steel is a magnetic metal and, although zinc isn’t magnetic, such a thin layer will not tamper with the magnetic property of steel.
