Steel Specifications

In the past, steel’s British specifications were determined via the letters “En” and a handful of numbers following this; however, the digits didn’t relate to steel’s composition or mechanical properties at all.

Instead, we now use a new British system of “BS 970”, wherein the content of alloying elements is represented via the first three digits in addition to the letters A, H, or M. Respectively, the letters stand for “analysis based”, “hardenability based”, or “mechanical properties based”. Finally, the carbon points are represented by two numbers after the letter.

Mild steel can have a carbon content of anywhere between 0.16% and 0.29%, with a melting point that sits between 1450 °C and 1520 °C. As a result of this high melting point, mild steel is more ductile when heated, leading to enhanced formability and machinability. It’s worth noting, though, that mild steel doesn’t take well to thorough hardening.
