Steel Specifications

Formerly, the letters “En” and a series of numbers were used to determine the British specifications for steel. Despite this, the numbers had nothing to do with the composition or mechanical properties of steel.

Currently, we use a new approach for British specifications, and this is the “BS 970” system. Within these specifications, the first three numbers refer to the content of alloying elements, and these are then followed by letters A, H, or M. Each letter stands for “analysis based”, “hardenability based”, or “mechanical properties based”, respectively. Lastly, the final two digits after the letters describe the carbon points.

The carbon content of mild steel can be anywhere from 0.16% to 0.29%, and the melting point sits anywhere between 1450 °C and 1520 °C. This high melting point means that mild steel is more ductile when heated, which makes it more formable and machinable. Although, mild steel doesn’t lend itself well to thorough hardening.
